Call for Submissions

The theme of the competition is:

How to change our world for the better: How my open research or teaching addresses societal challenges.

Research students/teams from Ireland and beyond are invited to submit their research in progress or findings for consideration for the second Open Scholarship Research Prize. The Prize recognises the substantial contribution that Open Scholarship makes to the betterment of science and society. Researchers improve society and research generally through making research more accessible, transparent are reproducible.

The Open Scholarship Prize 2022 will be hosted by the Atlantic Technological University (ATU) in partnership with the Open Scholarship Community Galway (OSCG) and NUI Galway. The Prize jury will be chaired by Dr Cóilín Minto.

The new Atlantic Technological University for the West and North-West of Ireland will be one of the largest multi-campus universities on the island, bringing together students, enterprise and communities spanning a unique geographical region in transition. The new TU has been formed by the Connacht-Ulster Alliance (CUA) of GMIT, LYIT and IT Sligo. Central to the mission of the new TU is support for Open Science and Open Scholarship. Researchers from across the CUA continue to support the OSCG mission in the region.

How to take part in the Open Scholarship Prize 2022

You are encouraged to submit an abstract of up to two hundred and fifty (250) words outlining how your open research or teaching addresses societal challenges.

We encourage submissions relating to experiences with Open Education, the use of Open Research practices, Open Research tools or the creative use of Open Data. Please send your abstract as a pdf or Word file to submissions@osc-galway.ie. The deadline for submissions is 22 March 2022.

Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their submissions by 28 March 2022. If you are successful we will ask you for a 10 minute presentation at the Open Scholarship Prize Final during the Open Scholarship Week on 12 April 2022 between 2pm and 4pm (GMT).

Applicants are reminded that the presentations will be open to the public and accordingly, abstracts and presentations should be prepared with a public audience in mind and use accessible language. Submissions can cover proposed research, research in progress or completed research.

Prizes will be presented to the equivalent value of €500 for First Place, €300 for Second Place and €200 for Third Place.
