The Library is delighted to announce the following lunchtime talk for Library Ireland Week 2017.
Michael Gibbons – Tuesday 28th Nov.
Archaeologist Michael Gibbons has worked extensively throughout Ireland and abroad for over 30 years. He is particularly associated with the archaeology of the west of Ireland and worked on the Donegal and Galway Archaeological Surveys. He was co-director of the National Sites and Monuments Record, Office of Public Works for ten years and now serves on The Folklore of Ireland Council. He also works in heritage tourism, particularly in the west of Ireland and the Boyne Valley.
On Tuesday 28th Nov at 1.00pm Michael will talk in GMIT Library on ‘Sacred Mountains and Islands of Ireland’s West Coast’
Marion McGarry – Wednesday 29th Nov.
Marion McGarry studied in Ulster University and the University of Limerick and has worked in the design industry in Ireland and the UK. She has lectured in Griffith College and LIT on art and design history. She currently lectures in GMIT Letterfack. Her main research interest is Irish identity expressed in design and material culture.
On Wednesday 29th Nov, Marion will speak on her book, The Irish Cottage, history culture and design.
Lorraine Tuck – Thursday 30th Nov.
The photographic artist Lorraine Tuck grew up in Oughterard, where the train was part of her family folklore. Lorraine published The Whistle Blowing in 2015. It is a beautifully designed and produced book with images of the route of the Clifden railway line woven with extracts from conversations with the Oughterard native, the late Paddy Geoghegan.
Lorraine will speak about The Whistle Blowing and her current work on Thursday 30th Nov.
All talks are in the Library Training Room (973) at 1.00pm.
