The Ordnance Survey (OS) was originally established in Britain in 1791, and in 1824 the Survey established its Irish headquarters in Dublin, in order to undertake the mapping and measurement of Irish townlands. The maps were drawn on a scale of 6 inches to one mile and published between 1833 and 1846. They were later revised on a county-by-county basis.
The original Ordnance Survey maps for Galway were published in 1842 and are an invaluable record of the landscape at this time. These maps are now available online. The digitized maps are the intellectual property of::

To view the 1842 Ordnance Survey 6 Inch Maps for Galway, you will need to download and install an SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) plug in as the maps are in this format. The plug in is available from Adobe - SVG. Currently, the maps can only be viewed with Internet Explorer (6.0 or later) under Windows (98 - XP).
